Karaoke among friends
After a recent business meeting we took off to the bar because we heard there was Karaoke. We had a good mix of Americans, Germans, and a Japanese guy too. People were knowingly telling me "This is very different from how they do it in Asia," as if I really cared. I sang "Mandi" to my namesaked coworker...she was delighted. Our nanny later informed me that this was horribly geeky, as apparently a Buffy the Vampire slayer sings Mandi in an episode...honestly, I had no idea.

One of the Americans sang that Four Non-blondes song, and he could have had any 40-something woman he wanted. Besides our group, the most notable song was three women who sang "The Boogie-woogie Bugle Boy". They really kicked ass.

I'm always one for thinking about what would be inappropriate on occasions like this. Personally I think you can only go wrong by being overly maudlin and sappy. You know "Take this job and shove it" would be welcomed by management for its hijinks value.

Kind of a lame post, but I need to keep this thing alive.

I think the key to karaoke is to visibly enjoy yourself. The people who act like they're on stage at La Scala are the ones who do a bad job.

I think that was the key to the success of Mandi and "My Ding-a-ling" (the other number I did. The people taking an hour to chose the perfect song typically stunk.

Wow-- I applaud your bravery on singing "My Ding-a-ling"!

It still can't beat that bit on "Arrested Development" when Jason Bateman and his niece sing "Afternoon Delight" together.

Also, if you didn't know about something that was done in a Joss Whedon project, that doesn't make what you did geeky.

Ignorance of the law is not an excuse for committing a crime.

I miss Arrested Development, but I wonder whether its short life-span was part of what made it such a great show.

I think beyond "Arrested Development" being among the canceled-too-soon group, it really had this mix of total zaniness, sharp, gag-laden writing plus joke-heavy zingers, themes and returning ideas that elevated it past sitcom status, and ensemble pieces with a wide net of characters that were all well performed. I mean, any show that even imagined putting Jeffrey Tambor, David Cross and Will Arnett in the same place ...

And I think the crime is Whedon himself.
