do do do do do Dora!

It was very cute. The other day Philipa was at Smith Memorial with a friend. I asked her if she wanted to go to the slide, she said "YES!" and turned to her friend, swung her arm, and cried, "Vamanos!"

They spoofed Dora the Explorer a little bit on The Daily Show the other night, discussing immigration. I thought that would be a perfect parody:

"Who do we ask for help when we want to get to San Diego?"

"First we go across the river, then we go over the fence, and that's how we get to the asparagus farm!"

My feelings on the whole immigration debate are those of disbelief. It's disturbing to hear discussions of the system by elected officials who appear to know nothing about it. Do they know how long it takes for the INS, or their state offices, to double-check a name-spelling? Have any of these people ever gone through the non-citizen line at the airport?

There appears to be no rationality left in politics anymore.

Let's review.

We have millions of difficult to fill low wage jobs that our higher wage jobs kind of depend on.

We have millions of people illegally crossing the border to fill these jobs.

Most stay, many have children who will be citizens.

Wouldn't it be better to simply create a guest worker program so they can work, we can get our jobs filled, and if you've shown you're a good citizen after so many years and pay your dues you get to say you earned citizenship?

Am I missing something?

You're missing the tortured bureaucracy that is the current INS. I'm quite confident that any additions to the INS's burden will not be funded and will be tacked on. These people will have to work for 8 years before applying, at which point it will take 7 years to check that they were here for those 8 years, during which they will not be allowed to move or leave the country lest the INS have to deal with a change of address.
